Affordable homes for Seniors under construction in Blaxland, NSW
Local business Kurrajong Hills Bricklaying is building a two
two-bedroom and
ten three-bedroom apartment complex in Blaxland with funding from
the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan.
The apartments have been designed specifically for seniors,
incorporating universal design features such as hand-held shower
heads, bathroom and toilet grab rails and wide corridors to
accommodate wheelchairs.
They will also have six-star energy ratings, with features such
as insulation, energy efficient lighting and draught-proof windows
and doors to ensuring that tenants’ living costs remain low.
The project, due for completion in October 2010, has provided a
boost to the local economy by providing local jobs and creating
opportunities for local suppliers.
Once completed, the new apartments will be ideally located for
seniors living, being close to parks, medical centres and Blaxland
train station.
The Social Housing Initiative is providing funding of $5.238
billion over three and a half years from 2008-09 to 2011-12 for the
construction of new social housing dwellings, and a further $400
million over two years for repairs and maintenance to existing
social housing dwellings.
The Australian Government’s investment in social housing will
deliver over 6,300 new homes in NSW alone, with over 6,100 already
commenced as at 25 June 2010.
