The upgrade of this level crossing is part of the $150 million
Boom Gates for Rail Crossings Program, an Nation Building-Economic
Stimulus Plan initiative. South Australia’s share is $13.6 million,
which will result in the safety upgrade of 34 level crossings in
total.
The level crossings were identified by the South Australia
Government using a model that takes into account factors such as
road and rail traffic volumes and speeds, crashes and incidents,
visibility for motorists and train drivers and heavy vehicle routes.
The Krondorf Road level crossing in Tanunda is part of the
upgrade of 6 level crossings on the Gawler to Angaston railway line
running through the Barossa Valley. The crossing carries
approximately 450 vehicles per day, and although the crossing was
controlled by a Stop sign, heavy vegetation and embankments
restricted the visibility of an approaching train.
This crossing has now been upgraded to flashing lights and bells,
at a total cost of $345,000. The Barossa Council undertook the
installation of new advance warning signage and pavement marking to
advise motorists of the crossing ahead.
The work commenced on 19 October and was completed on 1 December
2009.
