Social Housing Initiative well underway in Hobart, Tasmania
The construction of over 20 new social housing units in the
suburb of Moonah in Hobart is well underway, with tenants expected
to move into a number of the units as early as next month.
Under Stage One of the Social Housing Initiative of the Nation
Building – Economic Stimulus Plan, Mr Gary Olding from G.A and E.A
Olding Pty Ltd in Rosny, Hobart, is constructing the new units in
two stages.
Construction began on 3 July on the first stage of works, which
includes seven two and three bedroom units. The final touches to
each unit, including painting and carpeting, are now underway, and
they are expected to be completed next month.
“We’re getting to the stage that individual fences between the
units are getting done, and there will be power to all units by the
end of this month...so we’re on target,” explains Gary.
“I would like to think tenants will be moved in in November,”
said Gary.
The units each include open plan kitchens, large user-friendly
bathrooms, separate internal laundries, built-in wardrobes, storage
cupboards and garages with internal access. The units are also
located within walking distance to a range of shops and amenities.
The second stage of works includes 14 two and three bedroom
units, on the site of an old function centre. Demolition works are
now complete, and Gary expects to begin construction of the units
next week.
Gary explains that he initially put the development designs
together some time ago, however the State Government was unable to
proceed with the project.
“Then all of a sudden they rang and said can we do this. So the
funding came at the right time,” Gary said.
Gary expects the 14 units will be completed by May next year,
well ahead of schedule.
