New facilities, repairs and refurbishments for Glen Huon
Primary, Tasmania
The Glen Huon Primary School has been a fixture in the
picturesque Huon Valley, Tasmania since opening in 1880. Spread over
nearly two hectares of native landscape, the school provides a truly
motivational backdrop for teaching and learning.
Glen Huon Primary was provided funding under both the National
School Pride (NSP) program and Primary Schools for the 21st Century
(P21) element of the Building the Education Revolution (BER), a key
component of the Australian Government’s Nation Building-Economic
Stimulus Plan The funding under the NSP component provided the
school refurbished classrooms, outdoor learning areas and a shade
structure whilst the P21 funding is being used for the building of a
new multipurpose hall, classroom and early learning centre.
Acting Principal Roger OMeagher is thrilled with the school’s
new BER additions. Sentiments echoed by Year Six student Jessica
Angell, who has seen firsthand how the BER project has impacted the
local students and community.
“This has enabled us to build this new hall, a canteen and to
resurface our oval,” Jessica explained.
The new hall has given students a wet weather refuge during lunch
and recess, and a place to play table tennis at lunch time, which
has proven to be very popular.
The school has also been able to resurface the sports oval and
undertake vital repairs and refurbishments around the school, some
of which had been planned for some time.
Jessica explained that the entire school community had been
energised by the new facilities.
“The new school hall has been used by local artists, after school
hours the hall can be hired out for things such as African drumming
workshops,” Jessica explained.
“We now have a top quality canteen, better cooking facilities, an
improved area to serve food and a place where we can go and have
cooking lessons.”
“The whole community is very grateful and we love the ‘new look’
Glen Huon Primary School,” Jessica said.
