Bellerive Oval lights up
Tuesday, 2 March 2010
The twenty/20 match held on the 21 February between Australia and
the West Indies was the first international cricket game to be
played under Bellerive Oval's recently installed lights, marking the
start of a new era for Tasmania’s iconic ground.
Four new 56 metre high light towers were installed at Bellerive
Oval allowing for night games of Aussie Rules and cricket to become
regular fixtures on Australia's sporting calendar.
The installation of the towers was a jointly funded project, with
the Tasmanian Government contributing $2.85 million, the Tasmanian
Cricket Association providing $100,000 and the remaining $2 million
provided under the Regional and Community Infrastructure Program, a
key element of the Australian Government’s Nation Building-Economic
Stimulus Plan.
In total 50 jobs were supported during the installation of the
lights and the community is likely to benefit further with the
possibility of more world class events being held at the Oval.
