Major social housing project underway in Tasmania
Wednesday, 2 September 2009
Minister for Housing, the Hon Tanya Plibersek, and Tasmanian
Minister for Human Services, Lin Thorp, yesterday inspected progress
on a major social housing repairs and maintenance project in New
Town, Tasmania.
The 62 unit complex – one of the largest social housing complexes in
Tasmania – is being upgraded as part of the Social Housing
Initiative of the Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan.
The complex has been in desperate need of large scale renovation,
with a number of the units no longer suitable for occupation.
Work has commenced on each of the 62 units, with renovations
including new kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, floors coverings and
internal and external painting.
The first stage of works, which included 12 units and the new common
area, has now been completed.
Housing Tasmania engaged contractor Spotless to undertake the
upgrading work. The company is currently employing 48 tradespeople
and 10 apprentices to work a number of projects funded under the
Economic Stimulus Plan.
The $3 million project in New Town is part of the Australian
Government’s investment to upgrade a total of 516 properties across
Tasmania under the Social Housing Initiative.
