Construction underway at WA primary schools
Friday, 2 October 2009
The laying of a foundation at Mirrabooka Primary School recently
signalled the start of onsite construction across Western Australia
under the Primary Schools for the 21st Century element of the
Building the Education Revolution.
The foundation at Mirrabooka Primary School, in Perth’s northern
suburbs, is for the school’s new $750,000 library. Construction also
began this week on a new undercover assembly area, canteen, and art
and music rooms at the school, using funding of $1.3 million.
Mirrabooka Primary School Principal, Mr Chris Brackenreg, said
the new facilities were a huge boost for the school, particularly
after the number of classes doubled in 2005 when they established an
Intensive English Centre.
“At the moment we don’t have an undercover area, so our students
and teachers have limited facilities in wet weather,” Mr Brackenreg
said.
“Similarly, art and music lessons are conducted wherever a
teacher can find a free space, so having dedicated rooms will allow
students to try new activities and teachers to plan a broader range
of experiences.”
“Built in the 1960s, our library is dated and small. A new
library will bring us in line with modern requirements for the
latest in IT and other research facilities, and provide more space
for our students and the parent groups who also use our library,”
explained Mr Brackenreg.
Construction is also underway at Gwynne Park Primary School, in
Perth’s southern suburbs. Students at Gwynne Park Primary School
will also benefit from a new $750,000 library, and a $1.7 million
undercover assembly area with multipurpose room.
