New community kitchen for St Peters Town Hall, Sydney
Friday, 2 October 2009
St Peters Town Hall, in the Sydney suburb of Sydenham, was
recently able to transform its 30-year old kitchen facilities using
funding provided under the Regional and Local Community
Infrastructure Program (RLCIP) of the Nation Building – Economic
Stimulus Plan.
Opened in 1927, St Peters Town Hall is a popular community
facility, housing St Peters library and several halls available for
community use.
Prior to the recent kitchen upgrade however, the main hall was
underutilised.
Mr Justin Fitzpatrick, Marrickville Council, explained that with
old chipboard benches and cupboards hanging off, many people had
previously complained about the state of the kitchen, which couldn’t
cater for more than 20 people.
“The kitchen was in a very bad state, almost not functional,”
said Mr Fitzpatrick.
The funding allowed Marrickville Council to replace the kitchen
with stainless steel bench tops, install all new energy efficient
appliances, paint, and lay commercial grade flooring. The project
was completed in June.
With recent Council upgrades to the main hall, including works to
the ceiling and walls, the kitchen was the last part of the hall
area that required attention.
“The funding was timely,” said Mr Luigi Signorelli, Marrickville
Council.
The combined upgrades have opened up additional uses of the hall,
and provided a functional catering space.
Mr Signorelli explained that since the kitchen upgrade, hall
bookings have increased and the Council’s Community Facilities
Officer reports that feedback has been very positive, particularly
amongst regular users of the hall.
Marrickville Council has recently completed a similar kitchen
upgrade in Marrickville Town Hall, also using funds under the RLCIP.
