Students enjoy new outdoor facilities at St Georges Road Primary School, Victoria
Monday, 2 November 2009
Within days of landscapers finishing the new outdoor amphitheatre
at St Georges Road Primary School in Shepparton, Victoria, students
were making full use of the new space.
St George’s Road Primary School used funding of $150,000 under
the National School Pride Program element of the Building the
Education Revolution (BER), to develop the junior playground into an
outdoor learning environment by installing tiered seating and
sun-shading, extending the veranda and re-asphalting the area.
School Principal, Mr Dougie Souter, said the new play area was as
popular with teachers as it was with the students.
“Having an outdoor learning space creates flexibility in the way
kids learn. It’s such a benefit to have diverse, engaging
environments for learning, such as this,” Mr Souter said.
The school engaged local contractors to undertake the playground
redevelopment.
Under the Primary Schools for the 21st Century element of BER, St
Georges Road Primary School also received $2.5 million in funding
for a new library and learning neighbourhood.
“We are very excited about this new facility because it means we
will be able to move out of the outdated portables we currently have
at our school and into environments that are well-suited for 21st
century learning,” explained Ms Souter.
“Without the BER funding, we would never have been able to
achieve anything of this scale.”
