The Prime Minister today welcomed the release of the Commonwealth
Coordinator-General’s report into the progress of the Government’s
Nation Building-Economic Stimulus Plan (the Plan).
The Progress Report outlines significant progress across the
Government’s Plan - aimed at stimulating the Australian economy and
supporting Australian jobs. The report states that the stimulus
measures introduced by the Government have helped to soften the
impact of the global recession with unemployment expected to peak
around 1.5 percentage points lower than in the absence of the
stimulus.
Over the 11 month period since inception, the Report states that
49,000 major construction and infrastructure projects have been
approved, over 34,000 are underway and over 8,300 projects are
complete. Already $25.8 billion has been paid across the Plan.
The Report highlights that 2010 will be a significant period of
construction activity across Australia, after which the construction
phases of the Plan will gradually withdraw into 2011 and 2012.

Garran Primary School is one of around 9,500 schools to benefit
from the Government’s stimulus funding injection. The school
received $200,000 under the National School Pride (NSP) program to
refurbish their existing hall into a new library, which was
officially opened on 9 December 2009 and also received $3.15 million
in funding under Primary Schools for the 21st Century (P21) to build
a new multi-purpose hall. This new state of the art facility is due
for completion by the end of 2010.
