One of the 62 units gutted
in preparation for major
renovation
The suburb of New Town in Tasmania is the site of one of Housing Tasmania's
largest social housing complexes.
The ageing property is in desperate need of repair, with a number of the 62
units no longer suitable for occupation.
Funding provided to the Tasmanian Government under the Nation Building –
Economic Stimulus Plan for social housing repairs and maintenance is now
changing this.
Major renovations are underway which will see each of the 62 units fully
renovated. The renovations will include major refurbishments such as new
kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, floors coverings and internal and external
painting.
The units are being refurbished in stages, allowing new tenants to move in as
each is unit is completed.
A total of 516 properties across Tasmania will receive renovations of this
scale as a direct result of the Economic Stimulus Plan. The work has allowed
Housing Tasmania to engage additional building maintenance contractors, boosting
local employment.
