The first of 510 new social housing dwellings in Tasmania have
now been completed under the Social Housing Initiative of the Nation
Building – Economic Stimulus Plan.
The Minister for Housing, the Hon Tanya Plibersek, and Tasmanian
Minister for Human Services, Lin Thorp, recently made the
announcement while visiting three new units at Prospect in
Launceston.
The two and three bedroom units were recently purchased as part
of Stage One of the Social Housing Initiative, and have been
tenanted since June.
The Prospect units are part of the Australian Government’s Stage
One investment to purchase or construct 65 new homes across
Tasmania, helping to address the State’s need for social housing.
As currently approved, Stage Two will deliver a further 430 new
dwellings, significantly increasing the supply of social housing in
Tasmania.
In addition, a total of 516 existing social housing dwellings
across Tasmania will be upgraded under the Social Housing
Initiative.
