New homes underway in Queanbeyan
Friday, 5 June 2009
A site in Queanbeyan, NSW, previously occupied by a single
cottage, is being redeveloped to provide four new social housing
dwellings.
The construction of the four one and two bedroom units is part of
Stage One-New Construction of the Social Housing Initiative, under
the Economic Stimulus Plan.
A total of 32 people, from bricklayers to plumbers, have been
directly working on this site since work began in February. Works
are well advanced, with 50 per cent of the interior fit-out already
complete.
The new units will feature carpeted bedrooms and living areas;
ceramic tiled kitchen, bathroom and laundry areas; individual 1,500
litre water tanks per dwelling; off-street parking, and private
entrances. Low maintenance landscaping, with hardy plants and turf,
is also planned throughout the site to minimise water usage.
In keeping with the current streetscape, the new units have been
designed with a cottage design in mind, single story at the front
and double story at the rear.
The homes will be completed and ready for tenants to move in by
late September 2009.
A total of 17 new social housing dwellings will be constructed in
the area under Stage One, at a cost of $4.5 million.
Across New South Wales, funding of $225 million has been approved
under Stage One to construct 851 new dwellings over the next twelve
months.
