Tuesday, April 07 2009
The Australian Government has announced a $950million Jobs and Training Package to secure and support jobs and build skills in local communities.
The new package includes a $650million Jobs Fund to support local projects that will create jobs and training opportunities for those affected by the downturn. The fund will help councils build new community infrastructure such as playgrounds and bike paths and restore heritage buildings.
An additional $300million will help retrenched workers get immediate access to employment assistance to find a job or training. This is complemented by a new agreement with leading banks to postpone mortgage repayments up to 12 months.
The Australian Government will invest $20.8 million to employ Local Employment Coordinators in regions most affected by job losses.
