Boost for social housing and jobs
Tuesday, April 07 2009
Social housing stocks in Victoria, NSW and the ACT will be boosted and construction jobs supported with an Australian Government investment of more than $171 million in Victoria, $11million in the ACT and $225million in NSW.
The investment is part of phase one of the $6.4 billion social housing component of the Government’s $42 billion Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan. Phase one comprises $692 million nationally.
This initiative will result in the delivery of 667 new social housing dwellings across Victoria by July next year, 56 new social housing dwellings across the ACT over the next two years and 851 new social housing dwellings across NSW by July 2010.
This investment will build homes for families whilst supporting jobs in the construction industry, including apprenticeships with a likely positive flow on effect to suppliers, small businesses and local economies.
Further homes will also be constructed under the much larger Stage 2 of the package to be announced later this year.
