The Prime Minister, the Hon Kevin Rudd, and the Parliamentary
Secretary for Western and Northern Australia, the Hon Gary Gray,
have launched the Australian Government’s $195 million investment in
the East Kimberley region of Western Australia as part of the Nation
Building – Economic Stimulus Plan.
The Prime Minister and Mr Gray, together with the Western
Australian Premier, the Hon Colin Barnett, and the Western
Australian Minister for Regional Development, the Hon Brendon
Grylls, recently met at Kununurra District High School to sign an
agreement to implement the package.
The East Kimberley Development Package builds on the Western
Australian Government's investment in the Ord Irrigation Area
expansion and addresses much needed social and economic development
in the East Kimberley, particularly for local Indigenous
communities.
The Australian and Western Australian Governments worked with the
local communities to identify projects that will address the
shortfall in infrastructure in the region and contribute to a
sustainable future.
The package includes investments in Kununurra and across
the East Kimberley in health, aged care, early childhood, education
and training, social and transition housing, transport, and sporting
and community facilities.
