Students undercover at Cooran State School
Thursday, 10 June 2010
Cooran State School, situated in the Sunshine Coast hinterland,
celebrated their new $2 million undercover sports court and resource
centre on 21 May 2010.
Principal Geoff Pelling said the buildings would provide the
school’s 174 students with facilities that rival those of any school
on the Sunshine Coast.
The school's tennis court was covered and converted to an
all-weather, multi-purpose court. Drainage has been fixed, an
all-weather tuckshop sail installed and a demountable building moved
to make it wheelchair accessible.
New covered areas will ensure students are better protected from
the sun and rain. During the summer months the temperatures can
average around 28°C falling by less than 10 degrees in the winter
time. There is regular rainfall all year round and together with the
regular sunshine, the new facilities at Cooran State School will
ensure the hinterland climate doesn’t hamper outdoor activities.
The new resource centre houses a computer lab with 28 computers,
interactive whiteboards, meeting room and additional outdoor
learning area. The Preparatory building has been connected to the
internet, providing opportunities for younger students to have
exposure to new technologies and their teachers to access online
resources within the classroom.
"We identified what the school needed and I think we got an
excellent result," Mr Pelling said. “It has given us a 21st Century
approach to education to use with traditional learning. We look
forward to sharing the facilities with the wider community."
Cooran State School received funding of $2.125 million under the
Building the Education Revolution program.
