Parkes to Cootamundra rail track upgrade gets underway
Monday, 10 August 2009
Work commenced last week on the track upgrade of the 201
kilometre Cootamundra to Parkes section.
The $91.5 million project, funded under the Nation Building -
Economic Stimulus Plan, will replace worn track as well as all the
existing timber sleepers with 301,000 new concrete sleepers,
produced by Austrak's Wagga Wagga factory.
Until now, the rail line between Cootamundra and Parkes –
originally laid as a secondary line – had never been upgraded to
interstate standard, meaning it could only carry trains operating
under strict weight and speed restrictions.
This significant project will support up to120 jobs and take five
months to complete.
