Queensland and the Whitsunday coast, under the Social Housing
Initiative of the Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan.
Minister Plibersek visited the site of a $6 million Social Housing
Initiative project in Edmonton, Cairns that will deliver 20 new one

Across Far North Queensland, more than 200 new social housing
dwellings will be constructed in Cairns, Cooktown and Palm Cove, and
over 80 in the Tablelands, Innisfail, Tully and Ingham.
Minister Plibersek later toured the site of a $2 million project at
Cannonvale on the Whitsunday Coast that will deliver six two-bedroom
units by mid 2010.
Along the Whitsunday Coast, approval has been granted for the
construction of 80 new homes in Mackay, Bowen, Proserpine and
Cannonvale.
The Social Housing Initiative will provide funding of $5.238 billion
over three and a half years from 2008-09 to 2011-12 for the
construction of new social housing, and a further $400 million over
two years for the repairs and maintenance of existing public housing
