Extensive Refurbishment for Alberton Primary School
Thursday, 11 February 2010
Alberton Primary School in South Australia is now enjoying a new
learning street area with funding provided under the Building the
Education Revolution (BER) component of the Nation Building-Economic
Stimulus Plan. The project has involved the demolition of an old
lean-to building and addition of a new double classroom to create
what is called a “fishbowl” effect with the three double classrooms
now facing into a central area for students to use. The new layout
enables the supervision of students in all areas of the new
multifunctional space.
The new learning street area features cooking and science lab
facilities down each side, wireless internet throughout and walls
that can be folded away to create a suitable performing arts space.
Alberton Primary School has also undergone further extensive
classroom refurbishments including the replacement of carpets, new
joinery units and paint work. One refurbished area has become a new
Aboriginal Learning Centre set to benefit approximately one third of
the student population who are indigenous.
This project was non-standard and therefore needed to be designed
and documented from scratch. The architects and contractors worked
closely with the school principal, Mr Andrew Plastow, to have the
project commence in September 2009 and complete for the start of the
2010 school year.
