Tasmanian tourism boost with three capes track
Thursday, 11 March 2010
Tasmania’s tourism industry could soon have another ace up their
sleeve, with the Australian Government setting aside $12.5 million
to help construct the $33 million Three Capes Track through one of
the world’s most spectacular wilderness areas on the Tasman
Peninsula.
Starting at White Beach and ending in Fortescue Bay, the Track
will eventually stretch 68 kilometres, taking in Cape Raoul, Cape
Pillar, and Cape Hauy. There will be accommodation huts and install
water storage facilities along the route.
The Economic Stimulus Plan funded project is expected to create
up to 164 jobs and apprenticeships during construction, as well as
increase economic activity in regional Australia.
Once completed, the Three Capes Track is expected to inject as
much as $188 million into the Tasmanian economy each year.
The remaining funding for the Tracks construction is expected to
come from the State Government and private tourism operators. The
upgrade of existing tracks are expected to start as soon as next
month, with the entire project to be completed by the end of 2012.
