Work to upgrade three social housing properties in Port Pirie,
South Australia, is progressing well with 30 per cent of the works
now complete.
The upgrade of the three properties in Port Pirie, under the
Social Housing Initiative of the Nation Building – Economic Stimulus
Plan, is being carried out by Housing SA, in conjunction with
program partners BoysTown.
BoysTown specialise in the employment of disadvantaged people who
are traditionally long term unemployed, and are currently
supervising eight young people aged between 17 and 20 years, to work
on the Port Pirie homes upgrade.
The eight young people undertook pre-employment training within
BoysTown before commencing work on the Economic Stimulus Plan
project. Pre-employment training involves the attainment of the
Construction Industry White card accreditation, OH&S training and on
site induction.
BoysTown report that the re-development and the opportunity
provided through the Port Pirie project have proven to be both a
very beneficial and a rewarding experience for the young people
involved. By training and working on site, with support from
BoysTown Building Supervisors, the young people have been able to
undertake a variety of tasks.
According to BoysTown the opportunity to develop a work ethic and
some recent work history are the key elements of the project that
will enable these young people to move into open employment.
