New housing plan to provide new homes and support jobs

The Australian and Western Australian Governments have committed to deliver 286 new social housing dwellings across the state by July 2010. A total of $70 million will be spent on the plan, with the WA Government contributing land worth almost $40 million.

The scheme will provide a stimulus to the economy by cushioning the global financial crisis, and by supporting an estimated 15,000 jobs in the construction sector.

As well as providing more affordable housing to people who need it the most, the plan will benefit the building and construction industries as well as associated industries such as building material manufacturers and suppliers.

Housing has featured strongly in the Government’s Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan – firstly through the First Home Owners Boost and then by the $6.4 billion announcement to build 20,000 social housing dwellings.
