Next stage of Ipswich Motorway underway
Tuesday, 14 July 2009
The next stage of works on the $2.5 billion upgrade of the Ipswich Motorway
has commenced with the first sod turned by the Parliamentary Secretary for
Infrastructure and Transport, the Hon Maxine McKew MP, and the Queensland Roads
Minister, Craig Wallace.
This upgrade is expected to directly and indirectly support over
6,700 jobs for the region, making it one of the largest construction
sites in the country. Jobs on the site vary from carpenters,
concreters, crane drivers, form setters, labourers, pipe layers,
plumbers, steel fixers, traffic controllers and truck drivers.
The upgrade will involve widening the motorway to a minimum of six
lanes and the construction of new bridges, a supporting network of
local and service roads, and new pedestrian and cycle
infrastructure.
The works will improve traffic flow along this key freight route
during peak periods and will reduce travel times for the 80,000
motorists who use this route every day.
The first of the Ipswich Motorway upgrades at the Ipswich/Logan
Interchange is due for completion before the end of the year. Both
stages of the Wacol to Darra upgrade will be completed by December
2010 and the Dinmore to Goodna upgrade is scheduled to finish in
2012.
