Innovative social housing development underway in Brisbane

A unique joint venture between affordable housing and private market for sale housing will see the construction of the Longland Street Newstead project, a set of new apartments for social housing in Brisbane.

The construction, which commenced in June 2009 and is due for completion in mid-2010, received $6.2 million under the Australian Government’s Nation Building-Economic Stimulus Plan – Social Housing Initiative.

The project includes 95 units, including nine studio units, 17 one-bedroom units and one wheel chair accessible unit. There will be lift access to all floors.

Brisbane Housing Company, a joint venture between Queensland government and Brisbane City Council, is building the site, which is situated within three kilometres to Brisbane’s CBD with close proximity to transport and services.

“This pioneering development is the largest project undertaken by a Queensland charity and the first time affordable housing and private market for sale housing is being combined in an apartment building,” CEO of the Brisbane Housing Company, David Cant said.

Income realised from the private market sales will be reinvested into more affordable housing for low income earners by the company.

The construction of this project is also expected to support 200 jobs.

Brisbane Housing Company, which has been in operation since 2002 and manages over 700 units of affordable housing for low income households in Brisbane is planning the construction of another 300 units, via 10 projects, under the Social Housing Initiative.
