The ACT Minister for Housing, John Hargreaves, and the Member for
Fraser, the Hon Bob McMullan MP, today announced funding of $75.9
million for Stage Two construction in the ACT, under the Social
Housing Initiative of the Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan.
A total of 292 new houses, townhouses and apartments will be
built across the ACT, particularly targeted at the homeless and the
elderly. Most of the new homes will feature two bedrooms, and a
six-star energy rating with gas heating and individual water tanks.
"With a rapidly ageing demographic in Canberra there is an
increasing demand for well located 2 bedroom properties in both the
public and private sectors,” said Mr Hargreaves.
"These properties will be especially designed for older people,
with amenities that include lock-up garages with internal access,
enclosed, secure courtyards to accommodate pets, private courtyards
and raised garden beds, gas heating and individual water tanks.”
The new properties will also be close to shops, transport and
community facilities.
The 292 new houses announced today will further complement the 57
new social housing properties to be built in the ACT under Stage
One, at a cost of $11.1 million. This is in addition to $6.4 million
in upgrades to 243 existing social housing dwellings across the
Territory.
