St Michael’s Collegiate School in Sandy Bay, Hobart Tasmania, is
enjoying their refurbished science laboratory as a result of funding
under the Building the Education Revolution (BER).
St Michael’s Collegiate received $200,000 in funding under the
National School Pride Program element of BER for the refurbishment
of their science room.
Works began during the September school holidays, and were
completed soon after.
Previously one large science room with inadequate space and poor
storage facilities, the refurbishment has extended the lab, with
folding doors providing the option of dividing it into two smaller
classrooms.
“It is so much better than the old 1960s lab we had,” said Head
of Science, St Michael’s Collegiate.
“It’s a much more functional space. It’s modular in that you can
teach anything in a classroom like this. You can extend the
workspace, or configure the classroom in any way you want. There is
so much economy of scale.”
Along with more space and improved storage facilities, new sealed
flooring angled towards the safety shower was laid, and hot and cold
running water was installed. A new interactive whiteboard, chairs
and bench tops completed the refurbishment.
Under the Primary Schools for the 21st Century element of BER, St
Michael’s Collegiate also received $2 million for the refurbishment
of their library, and works are currently underway.
