First soil turned at the Brighton Bypass

Brighton Bypass start of construction

The first sod was turned this week on the $164 million Midland Highway – Brighton Bypass project in Southern Tasmania – six months ahead of schedule.

Tasmanian Premier, David Bartlett, Parliamentary Secretary for Government Service Delivery, Senator Mark Arbib, and the Mayor of Brighton, Tony Foster, inspected the project site for the construction of a new alignment for the Midland Highway to bypass the towns of Brighton and Pontville, north of Hobart.

Funding for the bypass was brought forward as part of the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan to deliver key road infrastructure projects and create jobs during the current economic downturn.  The bypass and associated Transport Hub, are expected to provide up to 380 direct jobs with additional flow on benefits to local businesses.

The bypass will also provide major improvements to local communities by cutting travelling time on the Midland Highway, and improving safety in the built-up areas at its southern end.

The bypass is scheduled for completion by June 2012.
