Record response to build new homes in NSW
Friday, April 24 2009
There’s been a record response to the call for
tenders to build new social housing dwellings in
NSW.
The tender process called for proposals of land
and multi unit packages for potential purchase as
social housing under the Nation Building - Economic
Stimulus Plan.
In just four weeks, submissions for 877 sites
were received, with the potential to deliver more
than 15,000 new homes.
Approximately 75 per cent of the new properties
will be ready for tenants to move in to by December
2010.
Over the next three years, the Australian and NSW
Governments will invest $3 billion to build around
9,000 additional social housing homes in NSW, in a
range of locations across the State.
In partnership with the States and Territories,
20,000 new social housing units will be constructed
under the $6.4 billion social housing component of
the Economic Stimulus Plan. This includes $400
million over two years for repairs and maintenance
to existing public housing dwellings.
