First new home completed in NSW
Monday, 25 May 2009
The Minister for Housing, the Hon Tanya Plibersek, recently announced the
first fully constructed social housing property under the Nation Building –
Economic Stimulus Plan.
Construction of the four bedroom home in a Sydney suburb started in late
February, and was completed in approximately 13 weeks. The home will house a
family with three children, one of whom has a disability.
A total of 52 people were involved in the construction, including three
apprentices.
The home incorporates solar design principles with north facing living areas,
and is fully insulated. The gardens are specially designed to use as little
water as possible, and a 3,000 litre rainwater tank has been installed to
collect all the runoff from the roof area.
The home was designed with the residents needs in mind and features wider
hallways, doorways and special fittings to help make life easier.
In partnership with the New South Wales Government, the Australian Government
has committed to deliver 851 new social housing dwellings across the state by
July 2010, under stage one construction.
