Five million bricks ordered in New South Wales

Minister for Housing, the Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, and NSW Housing Minister David Borger yesterday handed over the five millionth brick ordered in NSW, as part of Stage One of the Social Housing Initiative under the Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan.

Minister Plibersek said the social housing construction component of the Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan was now well underway. Ninety per cent of all Stage One projects in NSW are now under construction.

The Managing Director of Gledhill Constructions, Mr Derek Sidey, who ordered the five millionth brick in a batch of 135,000 bricks, said he was able to employ 50 people including six apprentices on a Stage One project in Gladesville, Sydney.

"With the commencement of this particular project and the knowledge that there are a number of similar NSW Housing tender opportunities imminent, we have the confidence to maintain our staff levels and employ additional apprentices."

In partnership with the New South Wales Government, the Australian Government has committed to deliver 856 new social housing dwellings across the state by July 2010, under Stage One construction.
