Work commences on new social housing development in ACT

Friday, 29 January 2010

Last week federal Minister for Housing, Tanya Plibersek and ACT Minister for Housing, Joy Burch were on site to see firsthand work commencing on an $11.65 million housing development in Braddon, in the heart of Canberra.

The project once complete will feature 42 one and two bedroom apartments and will greatly improve social and affordable housing near the Capital's city centre.

"It is important that we have affordable housing in the heart of our cities, close to services like schools, universities, shops and public transport," said Ms Plibersek.

Funding of $5 million has been provided under the Social Housing Initiative of the Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan for 20 of the properties at the Braddon site with the ACT Government investing $6.65 million towards the project.

The ACT Government will transfer ten of the units for management by Community Housing Canberra Affordable Housing. The remainder of the units will be managed by Housing ACT.

The Government’s Social Housing Initiative will provide funding of $5.238 billion over three and a half years from 2008-09 to 2011-12 for the construction of new social housing (in two stages), and a further $400 million over two years for repairs and maintenance to existing public housing dwellings.

This Initiative is being conducted in partnership with State and Territory governments.
