Snowy Mountains Grammar School BER Opening
Friday, 29 January 2010
With the help of member for Eden-Monaro the Hon Dr Mike Kelly,
MP, Snowy Mountains Grammar School (SMGS) in Jindabyne, New South
Wales have officially opened their new library funded under the
Building the Education Revolution (BER). The school received
$850,000 as part of the Primary Schools for the 21st Century (P21)
and the project is one of the first P21 projects the area to be
completed.
“Naturally, we were delighted with the opportunity this funding
offered to the school and we quickly focussed on creating the best
possible resource for our students in a reasonable time period.”
said Principal Andrew Rostron.
The new building incorporates a traditional library with a state
of the art large resource room and a separate video conference room
allowing distance education students to fully interact with their
teachers. There are also two additional classrooms, which can be
transformed into a large meeting area by retracting the operable
wall in between the two rooms.
The new building uses passive cooling techniques, with windows
and fans designed to promote airflow and the removal of hot air from
the building.
The entire project has developed quite quickly according to
Andrew.
“It actually took less than ten months from the original concept
to the completion of the building and students will benefit from the
result from the first day of term 2010.” he said.
“Local Jindabyne architect, Jeff Robinson, did a terrific job of
interpreting our requirements into a functional and beautiful
building which complements the school’s existing structures”.
“Then local Jindabyne based Plum Constructions and their
sub-contractors turned the plans into reality in record time. We are
delighted with the results and look forward to our students reaping
the benefits for many years to come”, said Andrew.
