Refurbishment complete on the first social housing property in the ACT
Thursday, April 30 2009
The refurbishment of a property in Narrabundah in
Canberra was the first to be completed in the ACT
yesterday, under the Government’s Economic Stimulus
Plan.
The Minister for Housing, the Hon Tanya Plibersek,
and the ACT Minister for Housing, John Hargreaves,
visited the house yesterday, inspecting the works
which included a kitchen refurbishment, wet areas
refurbishment, internal and external painting, floor
coverings, and general repairs.
The 52 year old house was vacated in very poor
condition, and without the funding for refurbishment
as a result of the Economic Stimulus Plan, it would
have remained uninhabitable.
The work was completed in just 16 days, and will
now be returned to general housing stock.
The property in Narrabundah was the first of 243
social housing dwellings in the ACT to be upgraded,
as a result of $6.4 million in funding. The Plan
will also deliver 56 new social housing dwellings
across the ACT by July 2010 at a cost of $11.1
million, as part of stage one construction.
In partnership with the States and Territories,
20,000 new social housing units will be constructed
around Australia under the social housing component
of the Economic Stimulus Plan.
