South Australia’s biggest road project in 50 years, the Northern Expressway, recently reached a major milestone with the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Anthony Albanese, and the Premier of South Australia, Mike Rann, granting traffic access at the completed Angle Vale Interchange.

The Angle Vale Interchange will facilitate the safe traffic flow at the major intersection of the Northern Expressway and Angle Vale Road.

Once finished, the Northern Expressway will span 23 kilometres linking the Sturt Highway with Port Wakefield Road.

To date 2,200 people have been inducted on site.  The project will also provide considerable economic benefits by providing a new northern access route to the city of Adelaide.

The new road will also reduce travel time between Adelaide and the Riverland and Barossa Regions by up to 20 minutes.

The Australian Government contributed $451.2 million to the construction of the Northern Expressway and Port Wakefield Road upgrade. The South Australian Government is contributing $112.8 million, taking total funding for the project to $564 million.

Construction on the Northern Expressway began in 2008 and is expected to be completed by September 2010.
