The Plan
In response to the worst global financial conditions in 75 years the Australian Government announced a range of stimulus measures between October 2008 and March 2009. The centrepiece of this response, the $42 billion Nation Building and Jobs Plan, was announced on 3 February 2009 to support jobs and invest in future long term economic growth.
Following this announcement, the Nation Building and Jobs Plan combined with the December 2008 stimulus component to assume a whole-of-government identity and the title Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan (the Plan).
The Plan was designed to provide a boost to the economy at a time when the global economic outlook rapidly deteriorated, as well as invest in Australia’s future. The Plan included funding for investment in schools, housing, energy efficiency, roads, and community infrastructure.
Council of Australian Governments
In recognition of the critical global economic situation, a special meeting of the Council of Australian Governments was held. This meeting was held to ensure rapid and cooperative delivery of the Plan through a National Partnership Agreement on the Nation Building and Jobs Plan: Building prosperity for the future and supporting jobs now.
The National Partnership Agreement requires Commonwealth, State and Territory Coordinators-General to report regularly to the Council of Australian Governments meetings.
