Road and Rail

Road and Rail

Australians will benefit from faster, safer and more efficient road and rail transport, thanks to a total investment of more than $2.3 billion by the Australian Government under its Economic Stimulus Plan.

Under the Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan, new and existing roads, railways and boom gates will be constructed or upgraded while accident Black Spots and regional roads will be improved.

Infrastructure and transport projects like these help support jobs, improve facilities and provide important long-term economic and social benefits for communities throughout Australia.

The Australian Government will continue to work closely with state and territory governments to fast-track approvals for project funding under the plan, meaning local communities may benefit sooner.

Implementation

Rail

The Government will provide a total Equity Injection of $1.2 billion for the Australian Rail Transport Corporation (ARTC) to improve freight and passenger transport on the nation’s railways. This has already been delivered to the ARTC in full and 15 of the 17 projects have commenced. Of these, nine are now complete.

Roads

Funding of $711 million was been brought forward to accelerate 14 separate road projects under the Nation Building Program. All 14 projects have commenced and are progressing well with onsite construction underway on 11 of the projects, comprising: Banora Point upgrade on the Pacific Highway in NSW; South Australia’s Northern Expressway; the Ipswich Motorway Dinmore-Goodna, Springwood South to Daisy Hill upgrade on the Pacific Motorway and Douglas Arterial duplication in Queensland; the Western Ring Road, Nagambie bypass, and Realignment of Anthony’s Cutting between Melton and Bacchus Marsh projects in Victoria; Mandurah Entrance Road in Western Australia; and the Brighton Bypass in Tasmania.
