Stimulus Plan Construction & Maintenance Projects

The construction, refurbishment and repairs and maintenance of community infrastructure and housing is now underway across Australia.

Social housing dwellings are being repaired and refurbished, new social housing and Defence housing is being built, and a range of new and refurbished community infrastructure projects are underway.

Community Infrastructure

Construction and refurbishment of local community infrastructure such as town halls, parks, playgrounds, and sports facilities is now underway.

Examples of the types of community infrastructure work include:

  • Community centres
  • Swimming pools
  • Sports grounds and facilities
  • Convention or trade centres
  • Footpaths, streetscapes and curb reconstruction as part of suburb improvement
  • Paving or greening of road median strips and centre islands as part of a suburb improvement
  • Airport infrastructure and terminals
  • Recreational bicycle paths such as those running through recreation reserves
  • Access facilities such as bus shelters, footbridges, jetties and boat ramps

Funding of $800 million has been allocated to local government to build and renew more than 3,000 community infrastructure projects across Australia.

Investment in community infrastructure is a key component of the Government's Economic Stimulus Plan.

Housing

Approximately 19,300 new social housing dwellings will be built under the Economic Stimulus Plan with the assistance of the not-for-profit sector

Repairs and maintenance work will enable approximately 70,000 existing social housing dwellings will benefit from repairs and maintenance works. This includes significant repairs and maintenance to up to 10,000 social housing dwellings that are currently vacant or will become uninhabitable without this work.

Repairs and maintenance work has begun. The type of work required to the dwellings includes:

  • Kitchen upgrade
  • Wet areas repair
  • Window replacement
  • Paving
  • Tiling
  • Internal and external painting
  • General house repairs

Defence Housing

The Government is also assisting Australian Defence Force families by providing an additional $245.58 million to Defence Housing Australia for the construction of 829 residential houses, being built across Australia.

DHA have included an additional 27 houses to their original construction target of 802, using the funding of $245.58 million allocated under the Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan.

The new housing will be located to support Defence operational centres in:

  • Adelaide
  • Brisbane
  • Canberra
  • Darwin
  • Victoria
  • Hobart
  • Cairns
  • Hunter Valley
  • Ipswich
  • Sydney
  • Wagga Wagga
  • Wodonga
  • Townsville
  • Nowra
  • Toowoomba

To date, 318 houses have been completed and construction work is underway on the remaining 511 new Defence houses. Houses are now being built in all the above locations. Houses have been completed in Canberra, Hunter Valley, Darwin, Ipswich, Toowoomba, Brisbane, Townsville, Adelaide, Melbourne and Regional Victoria.

Important changes to the Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Accreditation Scheme

Tax Break for Small Business

Eligible small businesses will benefit from the Government's Economic Stimulus Plan with a Tax Break.

Under the Plan, the Government is providing direct assistance to small business through the Small Business and General Business Tax Break.

Small business will have access to an additional 50 per cent tax deduction for eligible assets costing $1,000 or more purchased between 13 December 2008 and 31 December 2009 and installed before 31 December 2010.
