Indigenous building company benefits from the Economic Stimulus Plan

As a direct result of the Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan, building company Aboriginal Connections Pty Ltd has secured local construction work under Stage One of the Social Housing Initiative.

Based in Kempsey, the company will construct 12 new two bedroom social housing dwellings in Kempsey and Ballina, in New South Wales.

The Economic Stimulus Plan is providing an opportunity for Aboriginal Connections to engage in communities across the state, and to develop links with contractors and suppliers in these regions.

Aboriginal Connections currently employs over 60 people, including 12 apprentices. The company has successfully graduated a number of apprentices over recent years, with three of their current apprentices due to graduate at the end of this year.

Manager of Aboriginal Connections, Mr Steven Farrell, said “We believe that the Economic Stimulus Plan is providing an excellent opportunity to further our employment strategy and goals,”

“The opportunity to skill up existing employees is certainly one of the more rewarding aspects,”

“The plan will ensure that there is enough work to go around. This will go along way for both Aboriginal Connections and for the Aboriginal employment outcomes we seek to achieve over the longer term,” Mr Farrell said.

The new dwellings are expected to be completed in early 2010.
