The community of Picola in northern Victoria is benefiting from
the Australian Government’s Nation Building – Economic Stimulus
Plan, with the completion of much needed community facility
upgrades.
Funding of $30,000 was provided for the refurbishment and
resurfacing of the Picola tennis and netball courts under the
$250 million Community Infrastructure Program.
Moira Shire Council Mayor, Cr David McKenzie, said the project
has had an enormous impact on the Picola community.
“Not only has it created a much safer playing surface, it has
provided the club and the broader community with a local sporting
facility of which they are rightly proud,†Cr McKenzie said.
“Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of this project is the fact
that, since its completion, training attendances have soared and
match day enthusiasm has never been greater,†he said.
The court upgrade is one of 13 infrastructure projects undertaken
by Moira Shire Council, which received $772,000 of funding under the
Program.
The injection of funding and the resultant works have provided
economic benefits to the community, with local contractors engaged
to undertake preparatory, concreting, fencing and resurfacing works.
These works were supported by the efforts of local club members who
provided coordination advice and oversight.
“The project, delivered in partnership across all three tiers of
government, has transformed this sporting facility from the poorest
quality court surface in the Shire to the best,†Cr McKenzie said.
As a result, it has generated enormous pride amongst local
netball and tennis players, as well as officials and the wider
community.
