The community of Renmark in South Australia’s Riverland region
has a new grandstand and change rooms complex as a result of the
Australian Government’s Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan.
Funding of $374,000 was provided under the Australian
Government’s $250 million Community Infrastructure Program for the
replacement of an old grandstand complex that had been declared
structurally unsound.
Renmark Paringa Mayor, Neil Martinson, said, “The
project has had a far reaching positive impact on the local economy
and communityâ€.
“The project has provided a significant boost to the local
economy, which at the present time is suffering the debilitating
effect of drought and water restrictions which have resulted in a
downturn in construction activity.â€
Seven apprentice positions were supported in the contractor team
of local and regional tradespersons that constructed the Renmark
change rooms and viewing facilities.
A number of local businesses also provided specialist services
during the construction period: tilt slabs were manufactured on site
by local contractors, roofing steelwork was manufactured and erected
by local contractors, and local labour and specialist trades
undertook site preparation and all internal fit out including
electrical plumbing and painting works.
The new facility was competed in April 2009 and comprises four
change rooms, an umpire’s room, two medical rooms, storage areas for
various sporting clubs and public conveniences. It also provides
elevated and covered seating for 200 spectators.
“These works will provide local sporting clubs with amenities
which are by far the best in our region and provide change rooms and
viewing facilities that are modern, safe and convenient,†Mayor Martinson said.
While the major winter occupant will be the Renmark Football
Club, the facility will also be used by local cricket and baseball
clubs during the summer.
“This project is the first major stage of the implementation of
the Renmark Recreation Precinct Master Plan and will provide
significant social and recreational benefits to the Renmark and
Paringa communities,†Mayor Martinson said.
“The new facility will assist Council in its promotion of a
healthy lifestyle through participation in sport.â€
