Redeveloped crisis accommodation opens
Women and children escaping domestic violence will get increased
support from a $1.75 million crisis accommodation redevelopment in
Southern Tasmania.
Jireh House was redeveloped after a disastrous fire in March 2008
and officially opened recently.-
The redevelopment has been made possible through $1.5 million
provided under Stage 1 of the Social Housing Initiative of the
Australian Government’s Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan
(NB-ESP).
The Jireh House organisation provided 15 per cent of the project
costs plus the development land.
Jireh House now includes three free-standing two-bedroom units,
while the main house includes three self-contained studios, a
separate office, meeting rooms, a children’s play area, kitchen,
dining and lounge room.
The redevelopment increases Jireh House’s capacity and assists in
providing privacy and a more familiar and supportive environment for
women and children.
The redevelopment employed 15 full-time staff from a range of
trades, including three apprentices.
The NB-ESP will see over 500 new homes built across Tasmania by
June 2011, increasing the number of housing options.
