On Thursday morning, 9 December 2010, Mr Wayne Swan was acting Prime Minister, and the builders at View Terrace in Everton Park, were looking proud as punch after a tough 48 hours in which they had put the final touches on a brand new estate.

Mr Swan announced to the media and guests that the site at View Terrace was the final to be completed in the Defence Housing Initiative of the Nation Building-Economic Stimulus Plan.

Mr Swan was then guided through one of the 32 new townhouses that are located in Everton Park, within his local electorate of Lilley.

"Today I opened the newest - and final - Defence homes built as part of this program at 'View Terrace' in Everton Park. This project alone injected more than $11 million into our own local economy through the life of their construction," said Mr Swan.

"It is a credit to the dedicated work of the local construction companies who worked on this project and Defence Housing Australia that these houses have completed three months ahead of time and on budget."

Defence Housing Australia (DHA) became involved in the Stimulus Plan in February 2009 after being allocated $245.58 million to build 802 houses. Since then, DHA have built a total of 829 houses around the country, which includes 27 more houses than the original target. In addition to this, DHA has completed the project three months ahead of schedule.

"Most importantly through the duration of the Defence Housing Initiative, I'm proud of the lasting difference that has been made through stimulus to the lives of so many of our hard-working and dedicated Defence personnel," said Mr Swan.

The new housing from the stimulus packaged has been constructed in areas that support Defence operational centres such as Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Victoria, Townsville, Cairns and Hunter Valley.

The program has not only aided Defence families with new housing, but has helped to sustain the residential construction industry across Australia's regional and metropolitan areas through support for jobs and sourcing materials from local suppliers.

Throughout the course of the stimulus plan, a number of VIPs have helped DHA to celebrate some major milestones of the program. There were a plethora of events including ribbon cuttings, sod turnings and media events all celebrating the various achievements of the stimulus package.

The final event held at View Terrace was a great way to draw to a close a very successful program.
