St Mary’s College for Hearing Impaired Students is an auditory oral Prep to Year 12 College for students with significant hearing loss, with four campuses in Victoria.

The school, with its primary campus located in Wantirna South, approximately 24 kilometres south east of Melbourne city, caters for upwards of 50 students.

The impact of the Building the Education Revolution construction on St Mary’s College has been significant in improving the education experience for the students, their parents and teachers.

With $250,000 under the Primary Schools for the 21st Century element and $50,000 under the National School Pride Program, the construction of the new facilities brings with it new possibilities for the whole community.

The school Principal, Marie Fram, said the construction of a new library and computer space, as well as refurbishment of the multipurpose room at the Wantirna South campus, has improved teaching capabilities.

“With the construction of a new library and computer room, we now have a focussed area for teaching and learning, with each student able to work individually or collaborate in small groups,” Ms Fram said.

“Refurbishments to the multipurpose room and the inclusion of a kitchen, provides the school with a flexible space for use by teachers undertaking professional development training, students involved in the cooking program designed to integrate literacy and real life learning, as well as the wider community.”

The $50,000 has been used towards the construction of a pergola, new signage and the refurbishment of essential computer infrastructure.

“The upgrade of these important facilities means so much to the St Mary’s College community and will further assist students with significant hearing loss to be included and fully participate in the curriculum of our partner schools,” Ms Fram said.
